
STMicroelectronics has unveiled a range of hardware cryptographic accelerators alongside dedicated software libraries for both general-purpose and secure microcontrollers, ensuring that future embedded systems can withstand quantum attacks.
As research trials indicate that quantum computers are beginning to surpass classical ones, industries are proactively preparing for their widespread adoption. In response, new government standards are emerging to standardize Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) using innovative techniques based on complex mathematical problems that quantum computers find difficult to solve. The current PQC standards have adopted the award-winning Keccak algorithm—a highly resilient hash function developed by ST’s experts.
There is an immediate need for solutions that comply with these standards, enabling developers to incorporate state-of-the-art protection now while continuously enhancing security as technology advances. ST’s new offerings are available for STM32 developers through the X-CUBE-PQC software library, and for Stellar automotive microcontrollers equipped with the SHA-3 hardware accelerator. Additionally, new software libraries and hardware IP cores for secure microcontrollers have been introduced, meeting Common Criteria and FIPS 140-3 requirements while supporting ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and XMSS/LMS PQC algorithms.
“Quantum computers are set to bring benefits to sectors like finance, scientific research, and earth observation, yet they also pose a risk by potentially compromising current cryptographic methods used in everyday devices,” said Jacques Fournier, Director of Security Platform at STMicroelectronics. “ST is the first to integrate quantum-resistant features across our entire product range, ensuring that all customers have access to the security levels they require.”
The post-quantum cryptographic solutions announced today are ready for immediate implementation, empowering customers to embed quantum-resistant safeguards into essential security functions such as firmware updates, secure boot, and authentication mechanisms.
