Designers of compact sensorless motor systems in mass markets such as consumer electronics, industrial applications, and automotive are under increasing pressure to improve efficiency, acoustics, and reliability while controlling costs and reducing development effort. Entry-level solutions based on single-coil drivers remain popular due to their low cost but often sacrifice efficiency and noise performance. While three-phase solutions offer superior performance, they traditionally require complex integration and longer development cycles.

The MLX80339 fills this gap by providing the performance benefits of three-phase motor control in an economical and easy-to-use integrated package. Part of Melexis' expanding no-code IC solution series, this device embeds configurable motor control logic directly onto the chip, enabling engineers to configure and design their applications without the need for specialized knowledge.

With no-code configuration and plug-and-play tools, the time required for motor driver prototyping is significantly reduced. When used with evaluation kits and the Melexis Compact Master, designs can be up and running in just 15 minutes. This intuitive ecosystem generates the necessary configuration parameters for stable motor startup and operation, simplifying complex engineering tasks into straightforward user inputs. Since the motor behavior logic is pre-characterized and validated by Melexis, engineers only need to perform final application-specific system validation, further accelerating time to market.

The MLX80339 is specifically designed for sensorless, silent operation, supporting up to 20W of power at 12V and up to 40W at 24V, with a configurable current limit of up to 3A. Integrated undervoltage, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection ensure reliable operation. The compact SO8-EP package is optimized for small fan applications such as cooling fans, ceiling fans, and automotive seat ventilation systems, as well as small motors, actuators, pumps, and related systems. Its wide power supply voltage range of 6V to 26V and operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C (junction temperature up to 150°C) further simplify system integration.

The MLX80339 supports traditional PWM-based fan control for easy plug-and-play replacement, while also offering digital interfaces such as UART and I²C to meet the needs of customers requiring additional diagnostics or multi-fan coordination. This allows designers to adopt more advanced control solutions when needed, without sacrificing the simplicity of mainstream designs.

“The introduction of the MLX80339 makes three-phase fan control no longer limited to traditional expert users,” said Marc Lambrechts, Melexis Product Line Director. “Pre-validated motor control logic, quick no-code setup, and outstanding performance enable engineers to quickly deliver cost-effective, quieter, and more efficient end products. This is a key step in expanding more complex motor control technology to a broader market.”
By eliminating system complexity, the MLX80339 is now accessible through new distribution channels and supports small batch projects previously unfeasible with embedded three-phase motor drivers.
